GAD can be treated with drug therapy, counseling, or both. Many persons have demonstrated improvement with counseling techniques such as behavioral and cognitive-behavioral therapy. GAD has also been shown to respond best to cognitive-behavioral therapy, an active therapy that involves more than just talking to a therapist. In CBT, the person gradually learns to see situations and problems in a different perspective and learns the methods and techniques to use to alleviate and reduce anxiety. Sometimes medication is a helpful adjunct to therapy, but for many people it is not necessary. Research indicates that generalized anxiety is fully treatable and can be successfully overcome over the course of about three to four months if the person is motivated and works toward recovery.

Psychotherapy: Most patients with mild symptoms can be treated with supportive counseling and education without need for medication. Other therapies: Relaxation training and cognitive therapy have been found to be of benefit. General measures: Regular exercise and avoidance of caffeine and alcohol.
References :
http://www.psychnet-uk.com/dsm_iv/generalized_anxiety_disorder.htm

Hello, im one of those people with GAD that can answer some of your questions for you. There are two main treatments for GAD. There are drugs, and Cognitve Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT probably sounds intimidating and strange, but dont worry about it. And then there is a combination of the two. I always refused drugs, because I knew I didnt need them and that they wouldnt only worsen my situation. As for how well it works, thats up too you. How badly do you want to feel better? How much work are you willing to putforth into your well-being. There is a strong chance that your personality will change. It will probably change for the better, you'll learn alot about yourself. It helps when a therapist, being a neutral point of view offers advice and listens to everything you say. My advice for you, is to goto your Doc and get a refferal to a therapist. See how you like him/her, if after a few visits you arent comfortable or plain dont like them, get another referral. Once you find someone you like, stick with them. You'll feel better, eventually you might become excited for your appointment. Once you start too see and feel results, its such a great feeling. Best of luck too you, any questions feel free to email.
References :
Will I feel like a normal person?
If the treatment is given is the right treatment for you, then depending on how bad your anxiety is, you will feel normal, or at least closer to normal than you do now.

How well will it work?
This depends on a lot of different things. Some people are more responsive to medication than others. Also, sometimes the first medication tried is not the right one, so more need to be tried. So don't expect to feel brilliant straight away, but please keep trying.

Will I be a happier person?
Once you're on the right medication, you will be much happier.

Will all my worrying and insecurities die down?
Not all of it. Remember, worrying and insecurities are, to some extent, perfectly normal feelings in appropriate situations.

Will I have any personality changes?
If you do, please see your doctor, because you're on the wrong medication.

You're doing the right thing by seeking treatment. I'd also advise that you get some form of counselling or therapy.
References :
Nate: Treatment for GAD generally MIGHT, depending on your situation, involve some medication (mild), counseling to help you understand what it is causing your reactions, and suggestions for somethings you can do for yourself (like learning relaxation techniques). Having someone assist you is important, to help you understand your worries and insecurities, to LISTEN to you. From personal experience, you will be happier, you may change in some small ways (but change is what you want/need, right?) and the calm you will feel is incredible! When your relieved of the worry and insecurity, you WILL feel some much better, it's a NATURAL high!! I'm not sure what a "normal" person is, it will work as well as you will let it and the effort you put into it, your worries and insecurities will die down, and I think you may enjoy some of the changes you will experience (being happier, not worrying all the time, feeling more secure, etc.) see what I mean? Take care :)
References :
There are two ways to approach this. A psychiatrist can prescribe medications that will help relieve the symptoms. A therapist could help you learn effective coping skills and perhaps help you find underlying psychological causes. You might first want to talk to your family doctor. Yes, these methods can be very helpful. The condition you describe is common and treatable.
