how to deal with social anxiety and depression?

In June I was diagnosed with social anxiety and major depression. I’m able to work but I have no friends. It’s hard for me to get my thoughts out well. It really bothers me because I do want to make some friends, especially those with the same interests as me. I’ve been like this as long as I can remember. How do I overcome this?
Thanks for the advice so far. I forgot to mention in, I’m currently on Zoloft, started out on 50 mg a day now up to 75 mg since August. I’ve been seeing a therapist since July which has helped somewhat.

Fist of all, good for you! You are working hard to change and that’s awesome!! I know how hard it is and have been through it myself. One thing that helped me, which I’m sure your therapist has recommended, is journaling. Write out your feelings and thoughts and just get it all out on paper. It doesn’t have to make sence or look nice or hold anyone’s attention, and to those of us who feel like we do, that’s important! I feel like i have a hard time making friends too, and the only reason i can figure is that i have trust issues. That may be something you are dealing with as well. Its sad to say, but i have to put forth effort to be friendly and tell myself before i go somewhere that i am going to make eye contact and say hello to people i see. Practice at the grocery store…its not that bad, i promise!

well for starters i know how you feel cause i have anxiety and depression as well. what helps me is therapy. i also am on meds and that helps. effexor so far seems to be great. your therapist can help you get over the social anxiety and help you with maybe getting to know some knew people. a support group is a good place to meet people. at work just start by smiling and saying hi to your coworkers. they aren’t expecting a performance but that might get them to come up and talk to you. hope that this helps

If you have been put on some form of medication, keep taking it. These things take a while to kick in. If you feel no improvement after a reasonable time, revisit your doctor.
Another thing that might help is a book called Potatoes not Prozac. It shows how diet can help improve mood and sleep. Most libraries will be able to get a copy for you. While you are at the library, check for information about groups that you could join that cover your interests.
Don’t do to much at once. Good luck.
